Arvon Township School District plans to reopen Feb. 23; bus service and safety steps detailed

The Arvon Township School District outlined a plan to resume in-person instruction on Feb. 23 and reviewed transportation and safety preparations at a Jan. 28 special meeting.
School personnel reported Lamers, the district's contracted bus service, began transporting students to L'Anse and Baraga on Jan. 25. A member of the school reopening committee will notify Lamers that the district plans to open for students on Feb. 23. District staff told the board the school currently has adequate cleaning and safety supplies and that instructional staff will be available for in-person teaching when doors reopen.
Vice President Linda Griffith and board Secretary Mary Deline said they will meet with teachers via Zoom to discuss reopening plans and will tour the building using a School Re-Opening Kit from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Lori Johnson, identified in the roll call as a teacher and principal, said parent letters were sent on Jan. 26 and that no responses had been received as of the meeting.
No vote or formal adoption of a reopening date was recorded in the minutes; discussion produced direction for staff and board members to continue planning and to coordinate with the contracted bus service. The board scheduled its next meeting for Feb. 9, 2021.
