Groveland asks Recreation Committee to survey leagues as board reviews field‑use fee changes

The Select Board on June 22 launched a multi‑meeting review of field‑use fees, permit language and how maintenance responsibilities are split between town crews and volunteer leagues. Town staff and Select Board member Steve Baker outlined recommendations and examples from other towns; Select Board members stressed the need for fiscal estimates of maintenance costs versus fee revenue.
Members asked the Recreation Committee to: (1) survey in‑town leagues on per‑player fees and maintenance practices, (2) provide counts of players per league where possible, and (3) compare Groveland’s proposed permit fees to peer towns to estimate the effect on families and league budgets. The board added that the Recreation Committee should document what volunteer groups currently do versus what would need to be provided by the town under stricter procurement and liability rules.
The motion to send this work to the Recreation Committee passed unanimously among those present (four in favor, one absent). The topic will return to the Select Board after the committee’s report.
