Pownal Fire & Rescue appears in federal appropriations but House and Senate amounts differ

The Town Administrator, Rebecca (Becky) Taylor-Chase, told the Select Board on June 8 that recent correspondence shows differing federal appropriation amounts for the Pownal Fire & Rescue facilities project.

Town Administrator Becky Taylor-Chase said an email from a staff member in Congresswoman Chellie Pingree's Portland office reported that the House Transportation, Housing and Urban Development (THUD) appropriations subcommittee included the town's Pownal Fire & Rescue project at $850,000. The Town Administrator also reported that Isabelle Lee, who has been doing grant writing for the town's Future Facilities Committee, informed the town that Senator Angus King's office had submitted the project at a request level of $5,290,000. The town itself has requests recorded at $4,000,000, $5,290,000 and $850,000 across congressional offices.

Why it matters: inclusion in appropriations language is an important step for a local capital project seeking federal funding, but differing amounts across chambers are common. The Town Administrator said the discrepancy does not mean final funding is set; appropriations must move through both chambers and conference before being enacted.

The Town Administrator said she will forward an outline of the next steps from the Future Facilities Committee and noted an information session is scheduled for next Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. so the community can learn more about the project and the grant timeline. Select Board members did not object to holding the session.

The town will continue to monitor congressional action; the amounts reported by the House and Senator King's office reflect current committee/subcommittee activity but are subject to change during the appropriations process.
