Cheri Tungland, chair of the Planning and Zoning Commission, opened the June 10 meeting at 5:30 p.m. and announced a public hearing on proposed amendments to the city’s 2017 Zoning Ordinance.
The commission reviewed a package of proposed changes that would: add regulations for accessory dwelling units (ADUs); amend variance standards; revise the required number of days for public notice; remove the ordinance category called “guest house”; and modify conditional uses in Commercial Districts. The transcript record shows no written or verbal public comments were received during the hearing, which Tungland closed at 5:41 p.m.
On formal motions following the hearing, the commission voted unanimously to recommend the City Council adopt each amendment. Rosenberg moved — and Becker seconded — to recommend ADU regulations requiring a minimum size of 800 square feet; the motion passed with all members voting in favor. Rosenberg then moved, with Rock seconding, to recommend amendments to the variance standards; that motion passed unanimously. Rosenberg and Rock also moved and passed a recommendation to change the public-notice timing requirements. The commission next approved a recommendation to remove the “guest house” classification from the ordinance, and it approved a separate motion recommending changes to Commercial District conditional uses.
Procedural motions earlier in the meeting approved the agenda and the minutes from May 20, 2026. The meeting was adjourned at 5:51 p.m.
The commission’s actions are recommendations to the City Council; the transcript records the commission’s unanimous votes but does not record City Council action or final ordinance language. The City Council must consider and act on these recommendations before any changes to the 2017 Zoning Ordinance take effect.
