Board approves district comprehensive school counseling plan mandated by 2025 law

Broken Arrow Public Schools approved its comprehensive school counseling program plan, a document the district must submit to the state department under 2025 legislation.
Ms. James, who led the plan’s development, told the board the plan outlines frameworks for academic, college-and-career, and social-emotional supports and will create consistency across school counselors. She said a committee of 35 to 40 parents, teachers, counselors and administrators contributed to the plan and that the district will submit it to the state by December; the state may request clarifications or revisions during review.
A board member asked whether the district had to change prior local practice; Ms. James said the district had already been moving toward these practices following pandemic-era student needs and that aligning to the state template and the American School Counselor Association framework should ease approval. The board approved moving the plan forward to the state and agreed copies or access information would be made available to families.
Ms. James said the plan will be posted with access accommodations (ADA) and that hard copies could be made available at school sites upon request.
