Sanford council approves DPW wage increase and multiple maintenance contracts

The Village of Sanford council on Oct. 13 approved a $1.00-per-hour raise for two public-works employees and voted to award several maintenance contracts covering holiday lighting, pavilion gutters, flagpole lighting repairs and tree plantings.
The $1 raise, made effective Oct. 11, was moved by Marcus Thrush and seconded by Don Whaley. The vote was 4–1: Yeas — Don Whaley, Marcus Thrush, Leah Ziems and Village President Dolores Porte; Nea — Carl Hamann. The increase applies to two DPW workers, according to the DPW report presented by Matt Hall.
Council then approved a $5,750 bid from Shine to install the village’s holiday lighting, a $1,700 bid from Quality First Gutters to add gutters to the large pavilion at the ballpark, and a $3,900 bid from Countyline Power to repair outdoor flagpole lights. Marcus Thrush moved each contract and all passed unanimously.
The council also approved up to $10,000 with Heinz Tree Service to purchase and plant as many as 20 maple trees (10–15 feet tall), contingent on warranty clarifications. The tree plan targets planting in November at locations that avoid storm-sewer and sprinkler-system conflicts — near the large pavilion, junior fields and the playground — and council members said they will seek donor sponsorships to offset cost.
Clerk Janell Kopke recorded the motions and votes in the meeting minutes. The items are budgeted through routine maintenance and capital-improvement lines, per the treasurer’s monthly report presented earlier in the meeting.
The council also noted that damaged personal property of DPW workers (specifically a pair of glasses) is not covered by village insurance; no action was taken on personal-coverage policy changes at this meeting.
The meeting adjourned at 8:15 p.m.
