John Ellerin, Public Works, told the commission that Riley County has been approved for a Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) cost‑share for the Winkler Mills bridge replacement project.
"We did apply for a cost share program with KOT. And we found out the other day that we were approved for that. Um, going to be about $600,000," Ellerin said. He described the project as a little over a $1 million bridge replacement and said the county is waiting for formal agreements and contracts with KDOT before setting the project out to bid.
Ellerin outlined next steps: finalizing the cost‑share agreement, completing design and field checks on related projects (including Marlat Road), and scheduling the bridge for construction once procurement is complete. He also briefed commissioners on several related public‑works activities — crosswalk and lighting work in Riley near a school, ongoing asphalt overlay inspections, seasonal hiring challenges for parks and asphalt crews, and the recently erected water tower that will soon be sand‑blasted and painted.
Commissioners were told the county plans to advertise the bridge project for bids after the cost‑share paperwork is complete and that staff will return with details about contract language and the expected procurement timeline.
