Kyle Spies, president of the Benton City Revitalization Organization (BCRO), told commissioners that the volunteer nonprofit has focused on beautification projects and community events that have drawn visitors, including a disc golf course that attracts players from across the region.
Spies said BCRO has run an adopt‑a‑highway program, supported resurfacing of local courts and is working on public art (painted bear sculptures) with the local schools and chamber. He described a youth leadership initiative, developed with partners including GEAR UP and the Washington Student Achievement Council, that gives students opportunities to plan local projects.
Two students addressed the board. Natalie Hartley, a junior, said the initiative has helped students build confidence and volunteerism and gives them a voice in community decisions. Kaylee, a junior, said the group is progressing on a book vending machine project for schools and the library and hopes to develop a sand volleyball court near the high school.
Commissioners praised the group’s volunteer work and encouraged continued collaboration with Tri‑Cities clubs and county parks programs. No county funding decisions were requested at the meeting.
What happens next: BCRO will continue youth outreach and project work; commissioners encouraged follow‑up coordination with county staff and other regional partners.
