Council hears Target request to add fourth wall sign for drive‑up pickup; item referred to Urban Affairs

The Marlborough City Council heard from a Target representative June 8 seeking modification of a special permit to increase exterior wall signage from three to four at the Target on Donald J. Lynch Boulevard. The requested change is intended to identify drive‑up pickup stalls.

Applicant Matthew Donnelly described the proposal as adding a fourth exterior wall sign to mark drive‑up pickup locations and distributed supporting drawings. Donnelly said the fourth sign would indicate where employees would bring online orders to customers parked in designated stalls and described beacon and doorway signage for pedestrian visibility: "we are proposing a fourth one here for an existing drive up stalls that are approved already."

Councilors asked whether the drive‑up service is already in use and whether the sign would apply only to Target or to other businesses; Donnelly said the drive‑up service is not yet in use at that location but is part of an approved program and that the proposed sign would indicate the pickup door and serve customers of the store. Councilors also asked about a designated waiting area and whether mobile‑app pickup differs from the proposed configuration. After public hearing steps and questions, the council closed the hearing and the chair indicated the matter will be handled by the Urban Affairs committee for further consideration.

No final council vote on the permit was recorded that evening; the Urban Affairs committee will address the request as part of its upcoming agenda.
