Committee hears update on Essex Elementary feasibility study and potential redistricting options

Committee members updated the public Dec. 10 on the Essex Elementary feasibility study. The building committee and the project architect presented scenarios under consideration: renovating or rebuilding Essex Elementary on the current site for approximately 250 students; a two‑site configuration with some Essex students attending Manchester Memorial School and a rebuilt facility in Essex for pre‑K; or moving all Essex students to Manchester with an addition at Manchester Memorial School.
Officials said the two options that move students to Manchester would require the school committee to vote on redistricting and then vote to amend the regional agreement; those steps would pause or alter the current Essex building project timeline and lead to a separate decision process that could include a town meeting and a debt‑exclusion vote in the future. The committee also heard that community members emphasized preserving tennis courts where possible and raised traffic, logistics and student‑culture impacts if students were moved during construction.
The project remains in the feasibility phase and the committee said it expects to identify a preferred pathway by mid‑ to late January, after which designs and more community meetings will follow.
