District administration updated the committee on MSBA-guided feasibility work for the Essex Elementary project. The team is studying three main scenarios: (1) renovate and add at the current Essex site with preK/k/grades split options; (2) combine Essex students with Manchester Memorial as the new consolidated elementary site (with Essex property turned back to the town); and (3) split grade-cohort configurations that would keep some grades at Essex while moving others to Memorial.
The superintendent emphasized that the space summaries presented to the committee are schematic study templates and represent a high-water mark for square footage that design efficiencies may reduce in later phases. The feasibility timeline calls for selecting a preferred model in mid-January to February, developing schematic design through May, and potentially aligning a town-meeting vote in October to meet MSBA schedules.
A community recap and tour will be held Dec. 9 at Manchester Memorial School (tour 4:30 p.m. followed by a presentation and Q&A) to present the early designs and solicit feedback. The administration encouraged residents to attend in person or online and announced that document slides and supporting materials will be made available in the newsletter and on the district website.
