During the superintendent’s report on April 7, Nahant officials outlined two possible override packages under discussion and described school efforts to support students during recent MCAS testing.
Superintendent Rob said a subcommittee is considering a larger override of about $1 million and a more moderate option of roughly $650,000. He said part of the discussion centers on how much of the override would fund fire department staffing — an option that would add four firefighters — and whether a larger ask would be politically viable or create an unacceptable tax "hit" for residents.
Rob also described test‑day activities intended to motivate students: decorated lockers carrying messages such as "Never give up," snack carts so students would not go hungry, and younger students writing letters of encouragement to older test takers. "It was a real positive day," Rob said, adding that organizers framed the activities as celebration and support rather than an incentive scheme.
Committee members thanked teachers and volunteers, and a parent present said the events helped create the right culture and lowered student anxiety. The committee received updates on enrollment and preschool/kindergarten registration procedures, including state rules that limit preschool class sizes when five or more students have early intervention plans.
The superintendent reported health trends for the past month: no current COVID‑19 or influenza A cases, one influenza B case and an uptick in stomach viruses; nurses are monitoring fevers and emphasizing hygiene. Second grade plans a field trip to the aquarium on April 16; transportation logistics were still being finalized.
The committee discussed hiring plans for special education staff and an occupational therapy position and noted the special education director post has not yet been posted while the administration reviews budget and salary tradeoffs. Members scheduled a special meeting next week to finalize the superintendent’s evaluation.
