Pelican Sound resilience planning: CDD asked to help coordinate storm-surge response
Summary

Eric Long, PSGRC general manager, told the River Ridge Board on Oct. 22 that Pelican Sound is developing a five- to ten-year resilience action plan to address increasing storm surge impacts. Using a hypothetical scenario referencing Hurricane Milton topography, Long said a 10- to 12-foot surge could have inundated roughly 45%–55% of the community and argued for proactive, coordinated planning with county, state and neighboring jurisdictions.
Long asked the district to designate a Board representative and staff or engineering contact to support coordination and to participate in an advisory/review panel. The Board endorsed the request and agreed that Long and newly appointed Supervisor Keith Merrill would assist; Supervisor Bob Schultz authorized District Engineer Charlie Krebs to provide technical support as necessary.
Why it matters: Long said addressing storm surge likely will require multi-agency engagement and take years to implement; the Board’s participation is positioned as a coordination and planning role rather than an immediate funding or construction commitment.
What’s next: Staff will work with Long and engineering to identify appropriate representatives and scope of involvement; no funding or intergovernmental agreement was approved at this meeting.
