Shelby council approves fire department repairs, VFA grant match and solar beacon

Shelby City Council on Jan. 7 approved multiple consent-agenda items and individual motions, including funding for fire department repairs and equipment and a small infrastructure purchase.
On a motion by Councilmember Pat Honeywell and second by Karen Schlueter, the meeting agenda for Jan. 7 was approved by roll call (all ayes). A subsequent motion by Honeywell, seconded by Todd Frank, approved the consent agenda, which included minutes corrections, the treasurer’s report and payment of bills.
Council then approved a change order (Change Order #3) for TK Concrete in the amount of $656.34 on a motion by Honeywell, second by Jackie Hursey; the motion passed by roll call (all ayes). The council also approved a Fire Department request for miscellaneous repairs and new tires totaling $15,056.80 (motion by Honeywell, second by Hursey; roll call: all ayes). The minutes record that the VFA grant for 2024 was approved for matching funds of approximately $3,500 to purchase three sets of wildland fire personal protective equipment, five MSA mask kits and one leaf blower; an MOU will be signed and returned by Jan. 31, 2025 (motion by Honeywell, second by Schlueter; roll call: all ayes).
Separately, the council approved purchase and installation of a solar-powered flashing beacon at the stop sign at Loves for $1,500 (motion by Honeywell, second by Hursey; roll call: all ayes). The Avoca Journal Herald was designated to remain Shelby’s official paper for legal publications (motion by Honeywell, second by Schlueter; roll call: all ayes).
Mayor Ron Kroll appointed Pat Honeywell as mayor pro‑tem for 2025 and presented the 2025 council committee list. The meeting adjourned at 8:04 p.m.; a budget workshop is scheduled for Jan. 21, 2025.
