Redevelopment authority raises workforce grant to $50,000, approves revised Maryville school project

The Hobart City Redevelopment Authority on March 16 approved increasing the education and workforce training grant for the 2027 cycle from $30,000 to $50,000 and accepted a scope revision for a Maryville High School construction-trades project.

The Chair moved to raise the grant amount and a commissioner seconded; the motion passed by voice vote. The commission noted the increase is to expand available funding for workforce-focused education grants in the coming cycle.

Developer Kate read a letter from Terrell Taylor, a construction-trades instructor at Maryville High School, describing a change in the project. Taylor wrote that, instead of eight outdoor food pantry boxes, the program will design and build eight indoor multipurpose distribution cabinets—one for each named community school—to store and distribute food, clothing and personal-hygiene items while providing hands-on learning for students. Kate and staff said the revised approach reduces liability and weather exposure while preserving the project’s service-learning goals and that the work will be completed within the existing approved budget.

Commissioners questioned liability and durability concerns and were told indoor placement will permit staff oversight, limit spoilage and better protect donated items. The commission then voted to accept the scope revision as presented.

Next steps: staff will record the approved funding increase in commission records for the 2027 grant cycle and proceed with the project under the revised scope; the commission noted the revised scope does not require additional grant funds beyond the newly authorized total.
