Mendon Township Fire Board approves two new members, addresses equipment and facility repairs

Mendon Township Fire Board approved two applicants to join the fire department and completed routine financial business at a brief meeting Sept. 3 at Mendon Township Hall. The board also received operational updates on apparatus, communications equipment and building maintenance.
Chief Avery reported that both candidates who had been interviewed were approved for department membership and that the department will need additional pagers to support calls. Avery said R&R Truck repaired a leak on the department’s tanker — referred to in the minutes as "the Big Tanker" — and that a turn-signal self-cancel problem remains under repair; he said the department will retrieve the vehicle if the turn-signal issue is what is holding up its return. He also reported the tornado siren is now working.
Supervisor Kline told the board he inspected the station’s gutter and roof and believes repairs beyond a rig-cap replacement are needed. When Chief Avery asked, "Is it hail damage?" Supervisor Kline replied, "No." Kline said smoke-detector release forms are now available and confirmed that residents who receive installations must sign the form.
On communications, Kline said pagers have been ordered and that the township is pursuing two radios from Leonidas that match existing equipment. He noted the current radios will become obsolete within about a year but should remain serviceable for roughly five years; a colleague named Cliff recommended purchasing radios that would cost about $1,000 more per unit.
Chief Avery reported the department has not yet received the training door ordered for the station and described the past month as "extremely busy." No old or new business items were raised for formal discussion.
Clerk Donna Cupp moved, and Aaron Olson supported, approval of the treasurer’s report; the board approved it. Treasurer Griffith moved, and Olson supported, approval of the August bills; the board approved payment. The meeting adjourned at 6:37 p.m.
