Committee recommends tree‑removal funding for CMAQ path redesign; Linden and Maple projects discussed

The Public Service Committee on March 6 recommended that the Village Council approve up to approximately $9,500 for tree removal associated with a redesigned CMAQ path from Harding’s to the trailer park if the Michigan Department of Transportation will not perform the work as routine maintenance.
Dan Faulkner reported that earlier bids exceeded the project estimate by roughly $90,000, prompting a redesign and a planned re‑bid in May. Environmental regulations requiring removal of trees larger than 3 inches in diameter were noted because of Indiana bat habitat restrictions. Motion by Lockhart, second by Trucks, recommended Council approval of about $9,500 for tree removal if MDOT declines to treat the work as routine maintenance; the motion carried.
Faulkner also updated the committee on ongoing talks with a developer about a possible Linden Street extension; funding could take up to two years and the developer requested temporary use of nearby parking areas while the project proceeds. Committee members discussed possible tax abatement options and utility coordination with AEP, but took no formal action.
On the Maple Street project, Faulkner said USDA paperwork is complete and surveying and pipe inspections are scheduled this month as part of design; no construction is expected this year.
