Chief Carl Carl Krause reported to the Public Service Committee that the department’s existing in‑car radios are not capable of encryption and need replacement to remain compatible with the county communications system. Krause provided vendor quotes: Motorola about $14,000 for two units and Kenwood roughly $6,000–$7,000 for two units, and said he and Village Manager Dan Faulkner are exploring a USDA grant opportunity to offset the cost. The committee took no action at the meeting.
Krause also said a prospective recruit passed the written exam and is expected to complete the required physical testing soon. He reported the north radar sign was out of service due to battery failure and that replacement batteries are covered by warranty.
On traffic enforcement, Krause reported that officers issued warnings after installing a stop sign on Elm Street about a week earlier; compliance has improved as motorists adjusted. Committee members discussed the potential for flashing stop signs but noted an estimated cost of about $5,000 per sign and decided not to pursue that option at this time.
