Fraser High School staff and students briefed the board on instructional and extracurricular updates at the district's March 10 meeting.
Angelina Apel, Fraser High School Student Council executive-board president, recapped the council's state competition in Grand Rapids and said the council's Charity Week raised more than $11,000 for the Fraser VFW. The student council also described other recent activities and outreach related to student engagement.
FHS Principal Ryan Sines described a change to the high school's schedule: SMART Hour (study, make up, assess, retest and tutor) will meet only on blue days but for a longer period on those days. A steering committee developed a common SMART syllabus, and the longer SMART Hour will allow students to travel twice during the period. To support college-readiness, math and English teachers developed short 10-question SAT practice quizzes for students in grades 9–11.
Stacy Kalpin and Heidi Impellizzeri, representing the Be Nice Club, said the 3rd Annual Winter Wellness Night drew more than 300 attendees. The club has hosted in-school events including a SMART-period guest speaker and plans a mental health week in May.
No formal board action was recorded on the instructional schedule or the student and club activities during the March 10 meeting.
