The Fruitport Community Schools Board of Education voted Oct. 20 to expel a student identified as UIC 3029719017 for a minimum of 180 school days, with eligibility to apply for reinstatement after 150 days, during a special meeting at the district central office.
Board President Dave Hazekamp called the meeting to order at 6:32 p.m. Board member Kris Cole moved, and Kathy Six seconded, to enter a closed session at 6:34 p.m. pursuant to Section 8(b) of the Michigan Open Meetings Act and at the written request of the student’s parent for a student-discipline hearing. The motion to enter closed session carried on a roll call vote recorded in the minutes; the transcript notes Steve Kelly arrived at 6:36 p.m. and Josh Mueller at 6:40 p.m.
The board returned to open session at 7:17 p.m. on a motion by Cole, seconded by Six. After returning to open session, Board member Josh Mueller moved and Kathy Six seconded Item 25-127, a Board Resolution for student discipline. The resolution, as recorded in the minutes, expelled Student UIC 3029719017 for a minimum of 180 school days; the student may apply for reinstatement to the Board of Education after 150 school days and must meet all conditions of reinstatement at the time of application. The roll-call vote on the resolution was recorded as: Burgess — absent; Cole — yes; Kelly — yes; Hazekamp — yes; Meeuwenberg — yes; Mueller — yes; Six — yes. The motion carried 6-0 with one absence (Tim Burgess).
The board adjourned at 7:25 p.m. on a motion by Kris Cole, seconded by JB Meeuwenberg.
