Fruitport board approves summer tax levy, buys two buses and signs insurance agreements

The Fruitport Community Schools Board on Oct. 20 approved multiple fiscal and personnel items, including a resolution allowing the district to collect summer property taxes in Spring Lake and Fruitport townships in 2026, authorization to purchase two school buses, and Letters of Agreement on health insurance offerings for clerical and instructional assistant employee groups.
On the summer tax resolution, the board voted by roll call: Kris Cole, Dave Hazekamp, Steve Kelly, JB Meeuwenberg, Josh Mueller and Kathy Six voted yea; Tim Burgess was absent. The motion carried 6-0. The resolution authorizes the district to levy and collect summer taxes in the named townships for summer 2026.
The board approved purchase of two regular education buses (including extended warranty) from Midwest Transit Equipment Inc.; funding cited in the motion allocated $189,930 from the Capital Projects Fund and $69,930 from the Building and Site Fund.
On personnel-related business the board approved Letters of Agreement between the district and the Fruitport Clerical Association and the Fruitport Instructional Assistants Association regarding the district's health insurance plan. The vote was 5-0 with one absence and one abstention; board member Kris Cole abstained, citing a conflict of interest because his wife is employed as an instructional assistant with the district.
Other routine business on the consent agenda also passed, including approval of a bill listing in the amount of $722,482.11 and acceptance of September financial and investments reports. The board adjourned at 8:15 p.m.
