Michiana planning update: Master Plan timeline, tree ordinance changes and summer events

The Planning Commission and Council discussed near-term planning priorities, proposed changes to the tree ordinance, and upcoming community events.
Julie Bonello, speaking for the Master Planning Task Force, said the goal is to complete the Master Plan by mid-fall. She thanked residents who completed the survey and said beaches and infrastructure are top priorities; the Task Force is meeting with departments to produce reports and will hold an open workshop on Saturday, July 26.
Nancy Thill presented proposed revisions to the Village tree ordinance, the largest being a shift to require contractors rather than homeowners to apply for tree permits. She also previewed the Arbor Day celebration scheduled for July 10 at the butterfly garden and said park fencing around trees will be replaced; staff reported poison hemlock resurgence in the butterfly garden.
Park staff reported the park grass is coming in and weed cleanup continues; the first summer concert is scheduled for Saturday, May 24 from 3:00–5:30 p.m. Beach staff reported preparations for Memorial Day are on schedule, including staining stairs at stops 39 and 40.
Councilors stressed keeping the Council informed of Planning Commission decisions so work can progress; no binding policy changes to the Master Plan or tree ordinance were adopted at the meeting.
