Michiana council adopts HONK parking program for non-residents at $10 an hour

The Village of Michiana council voted April 11 to adopt HONK Parking Operations’ pay-by-phone system for non-resident parking around the hall and park.
Council member Tim McCarthy moved to implement the program and Brian Cassidy seconded; the motion passed unanimously. John Cherewko of HONK presented the system and described how visitors would pay by scanning a QR code and using common digital payment methods such as Apple Pay, Google Pay and PayPal. The village would be able to set rates, activate or deactivate enforcement for events and receive a monthly payment from HONK.
Under the approved plan, the village will charge non-residents $10 per hour; HONK will collect payments, remit funds to the village monthly and assess a 2.9% credit-card transaction fee. The village’s service cost for HONK is $50 per month. Cherewko told the council the platform requires no app for users and can be suspended during village events.
Council members emphasized that residents with an official parking tag or golf-cart sticker will not be charged. The council approved the motion to proceed with the program for non-residents only.
The clerk will record the implementation steps and bring back any required signage and enforcement procedures to a future meeting.
