The Village of Michiana Council voted Dec. 13 to approve a one-year stewardship contract with Pizzo Stewardship to maintain the village’s pollinator (butterfly) garden in 2025. The contract covers hand removal of invasive and non-native species, brush cutting, mowing or targeted treatment, seed collection and dispersal, and includes time, travel and supplies.
Beth Denton, Territory Manager for Pizzo Stewardship, told the council crews finished the final phase of stewardship work for the current season — installing an erosion blanket and providing photographs — and presented the proposed 2025 contract. Councilmember Mike Botelho moved to approve a one-year contract not to exceed $5,000; Nancy Thill seconded the motion and a roll-call vote was 5–0 in favor.
The council discussed revisiting the contract if ongoing stewardship needs require continuation into 2026. The contract funds will come from the village budget lines already used for grounds and maintenance; no separate funding source was specified at the meeting.
The council also noted tree removals planned near the garden and said Village staff would coordinate with the tree board and AEP on timing and scope.
