Police report: 11–12 trees cut on village beach property; officials seek public help

Police Chief Ryan Layman told the Village Council on Nov. 8 that vandals recently cut down "11 or 12" trees on village property near Stop 40 on the beach. Layman said the incident occurred last Friday early afternoon; he has issued an alert and asked residents to report any information to the police.
Council members and the chief asked that the village notify its Arborist to appraise the loss, and to inform the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) and Chikaming Open Lands because the affected trees are located in a Critical Dune and on property held in a land trust.
No suspects or motives were reported in the meeting minutes. The police urged residents to come forward with tips and said investigative work is ongoing; the council also requested any appraisals or agency findings be shared with the village.
Next steps: the village will seek arborist appraisal and notify EGLE and Chikaming Open Lands as requested; the police department continues to accept tips from residents.
