Chief Avery reports Enbridge grant award; tanker back in service and tornado-siren policy noted at Mendon Township Fire Board

Mendon Township — At its Oct. 1, 2024 Mendon Township Fire Board meeting, Chief Avery reported the department received a $24,050 Enbridge grant to purchase two gas meters, a calibration kit and a cylinder of calibration gas, and noted the township’s out-of-pocket share for the grant items was $19.
The grant award was one of several operational updates Chief Avery delivered; he said the department’s large tanker has returned to service, restoring a vehicle the board uses for mutual-aid and major-incident responses. He also said pagers are in hand while radios remain pending and that attempts to borrow radios from Leonidas were unresolved after Bernard told the chief the decision was ‘‘up to the Chief’’ and Bernard said it was ‘‘up to Bernard.’’
Chief Avery described a change in the tornado-siren policy at Central Dispatch, saying the system will run sirens for three minutes and then shut off rather than operating continuously; ‘‘It will not continuously run,’’ the minutes record. Aaron Olson asked about replacement costs for a tornado alarm; Supervisor Kline estimated a new unit would cost ‘‘approximately $10,000.’’
The board handled routine business: Aaron Olson moved and Clerk Donna Cupp supported approval of the agenda and the Sept. 3, 2024 minutes; the minutes record the motions as carried but do not provide a roll-call vote tally. Donna Cupp moved, with Olson supporting, to approve the treasurer’s report; Olson moved and Cupp supported approval of the September bills. All approvals are recorded in the minutes as ‘‘Motion carried’’ with no further vote detail.
Under old business the minutes state the roof repair was completed (only the end cap required work) and that there will be no additional report on a proposed new fire hall until paperwork can be resubmitted in March 2025. Under ‘‘Good of the Order’’ Chief Avery listed community outreach dates: Oct. 11 for school fire-safety events; Oct. 18 at 4 p.m. assisting Centreville Fire at the Amish Youth Center; and Oct. 19 at Fall Fest.
The board moved its November meeting date to Nov. 19 because of the election and Supervisor Kline’s unavailability on the usual Tuesday. Donna Cupp moved to adjourn, Olson supported, and the meeting adjourned at 6:43 p.m.
