Algood council approves budget amendment to fund full-time Algood Branch library hours, shifts police funds

Mr. Morrison, presenting the ordinance during the council’s public hearing, said the change decreases certain police operating lines by $19,000 and uses that amount to increase police training and overtime. He said the amendment also reduces the general fund balance by $8,000 and increases parks contributions by $88,000 “to allow for a full-time employee to work at the Algood Branch Library and extend the hours of that branch so more folks will have access to it.”
Council members and staff noted that the cost for the library position is a shared expense, with the county contributing a portion. Chief (recorded in the transcript as the police chief) asked for a brief narrative clarifying how the overtime and training dollars would be used; Mr. Morrison said the funds are intended specifically for PD training and overtime needs.
The council moved to adopt the ordinance after the public hearing closed; recorded affirmative votes in the minutes included Councilman Williams, Councilwoman Hawkins and Vice Mayor Hill. The motion carried and the amendment was adopted as presented.
