Council approves nomination of Gilchrist Park to National Register of Historic Places

The Punta Gorda City Council voted July 1 to nominate Gilchrist Park to the National Register of Historic Places, acting on a request from the Historic Preservation Advisory Board.
Planner Adriana Gerky told council the nomination is primarily honorary, recognizing the park’s historical significance and that it could make the property eligible for certain grants. She said that, under current local rules, National Register designation could make some future alterations subject to a certificate of appropriateness review; if the Historic Preservation Advisory Board becomes a decision‑making body in the future, that could lengthen review timelines for some projects.
Councilmembers asked whether typical recreational changes — for example, adding a pavilion or pickleball courts — would still be allowed. Staff said such projects could still proceed but might require additional administrative review or public hearings depending on future code changes.
A motion to approve the nomination carried by voice vote. Council also requested an update at the joint meeting on July 7 from the HPAB and noted that nomination may enhance funding eligibility for park improvements.
Next steps: city manager and staff will submit the nomination application and provide an update to council at the July 7 joint meeting.
