Grand Haven board adopts student traits to anchor new strategic plan

The Grand Haven Area Public Schools Board of Education unanimously approved a set of six student traits to guide the district's Strategic Plan at its March 9 meeting. The traits approved were Collaboration/Teamwork; Critical Thinking; Empathy; Resilience; Communication; and Curiosity. The motion (17-827), made by Board member Cyndi Casemier and seconded by Board member Heather Herrygers, carried 7-0.
Board members said the traits will shape instructional priorities and the district's intervention systems. The district presented the traits as targets to be developed in all students through aligned instruction, shared assessment systems and increased parent engagement. The approval was presented as part of the Teaching & Learning agenda and followed a series of school updates, including a final improvement report from Robinson Elementary Principal Jeff Marcus.
The vote formalizes the traits that administrators and teachers will reference as the district refines curriculum and assessment practices for the coming school year. No dissent or amendments to the traits were recorded in the minutes. The board's next governance milestone is a spring board workshop planned for April 24 to finalize board goals and related implementation steps.
