District reports proficiency gains; Ferry Elementary says academic growth has exceeded 100%

District staff presented benchmark assessment results Feb. 9 showing notable short-term proficiency gains. Mary Jane Evink told the board that K–8 reading data reflects about 400 more students proficient than in the fall and K–8 math shows about 535 more students proficient; overall reading was described as stagnant but above the national average. Evink said targeted supports were added for a struggling fourth-grade cohort at Lake Hills.
Shelly Hammond, Ferry Elementary principal, described sustainable systems the school uses to meet student needs and said Ferry’s academic growth has exceeded 100 percent; she also reported a decrease in behavior calls as staff track daily behavior data. Student representatives McKenna Twa and Matt Keskine highlighted inclusive programs at Grand Haven High School such as LINKS, Unified Basketball and a planned One Crew Week in March focused on inclusion and accessibility.
