Committee backs first readings to shift field-trip approvals and update facility-naming policy

At its Feb. 3 meeting, the Board Labor & Policy Committee supported first readings to revise Policy 5506 so the Superintendent approves out-of-town field trips and recommended a First Reading for a naming-of-facilities policy; several other policy items were slated for further review by administration.
The Board Labor & Policy Committee of Grand Haven Area Public Schools on Feb. 3 recommended that a proposed revision to Policy 5506 be advanced to a First Reading at the full Board, moving approval authority for out-of-town field trips to the Superintendent.
The committee said flyers for such trips should state they are non‑District sponsored, and recommended an administrative guideline that would include a permission slip for students who drive themselves and require Superintendent approval for overnight trips. The committee also requested that the administration provide an example moderation policy for Policy 4217 and agreed Policy 4208 needs no change.
Committee members discussed other proposed policies. A newly recommended memorials policy (Policy 3310.01) was judged to need more administrative review. After discussing several edits, the committee supported forwarding Policy 3310.02, a naming-of-facilities policy, to the Board for a First Reading. The administration will prepare talking points related to an investigation tied to 'Armed Forces' but is not ready to recommend a policy change on that topic.
Board member Eickholt proposed a new policy that would allow students to earn the required 0.5 physical education credit through participation in designated extracurricular activities; administration will consult with Grand Haven High School to determine qualifying activities. The committee noted that Michigan Department of Education guidance requires a Board policy to authorize which activities may count for credit.
The committee also acknowledged an administrative guideline (3401-AG.01) has been developed for weather-related decisions.
Next steps: the administration will supply the requested moderation-policy example and the Armed Forces talking points; Policy 5506 and Policy 3310.02 were supported for First Reading at the next Board meeting.
