Hebron council adopts resolution to replace police levy, setting stage for ballot measure

At its May 22 meeting, the Village of Hebron Council adopted Resolution 24-07, a measure to replace the Police Department levy at current valuation and move the question toward the ballot.
Village Solicitor Wesley K. Untied explained the process to council members, saying "the government has a set 10 mill limitation and anything in excess of the standard government mill rate has to be assessed via a levy. He said the current Police Department levy is 5 mill. This will bring that levy to current valuation, which will be in excess of the government’s 10 mill limitation." Untied described the placement-on-ballot process as two-part: an initial ordinance to begin certification and a subsequent ordinance to formally place the levy amount on the ballot after the Licking County Auditor provides the certified amount.
Council President Randy Wolf moved to suspend the readings of Resolution 24-07; Mrs. Andrea Chapman seconded. After suspending the readings, Wolf moved to adopt Resolution 24-07; Chapman seconded. A roll call vote was taken with all councilmembers present voting in favor.
The next step is certification by the Licking County Auditor, which will determine the levy amount to appear on the ballot and require a second ordinance to finalize placement. The council did not set a final election date at the May 22 meeting.
