NORWALK, July 1, 2026 — The Land Use Committee unanimously authorized Mayor Barbara C. Smith to execute an agreement with Norwalk Senior Center, Inc. providing $72,500 in CDBG/HUD reimbursement grant funds for patio replacement and ADA access improvements at the center’s leased Roosevelt Center facility.
Beatatrix Lane, executive director of Norwalk Senior Center, Inc., described the patio as a longstanding community space used for Tai Chi, socials and other activities and said tree roots and wear have left bricks lifted and missing, creating a tripping hazard. "When we're spending time out on the patio, they feel like they're on vacation," Lane said, describing why the space is important to seniors and people with disabilities.
The project includes replacing the brick patio surface and improving accessibility so that building exits and routes to the patio meet ADA standards. Committee members praised the senior center’s programs and the accessibility focus; no council member raised substantive objections. Committee member Missy moved the item and the committee approved it by unanimous voice vote.
Why it matters: the work is intended to remove an identified trip hazard and to expand safe, accessible outdoor programming space for older adults and people with disabilities. The funds are reimbursements through a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) administered under HUD rules.
