Norwalk City committee reviews summer progress on school construction and utility work

NORWALK, July 1, 2026 — City staff briefed the Land Use Committee on summer work across multiple school construction projects, saying much of the heavy mechanical, electrical and finishing work is moving toward completion and utility connections are being scheduled.
Staff reported South Norwalk Elementary will begin rooftop photovoltaic (PV) installation and a cellular signal booster next week, and crews will repair floor surfaces and replace several concrete sidewalks that spalled over the winter. The presenter said the contractor has addressed paint and finish warranty issues and expects sidewalk and floor corrective work to be completed this summer.
At Norwalk High School, staff described interior mechanical, electrical and plumbing rough-ins as largely complete and said the project is moving into finishes — ceilings, walls and floors — with photos showing classroom and common-area progress. Eversource crews are on site installing transformers and primary cabling to enable permanent power, which staff said will allow rooftop units to run and maintain curing and manufacturer-required conditions for finishes. New gas service was also reported installed at the service entrance.
Brookside and Silvermine were described as substantially complete. Brookside is in turnover and closeout, with chillers and several rooftop units commissioned and building commissioning underway. Silvermine has begun a building management system upgrade to improve controls and efficiency using remaining project funds.
Staff said the Naramac project experienced a schedule constraint tied to an Eversource easement that has since been approved; pole relocations and transformer deliveries are being scheduled. The team reported confidence that remaining work will be wrapped up this summer, though schedules are tight. Marvin project work was described as ramping up for summer with demolition, rough-ins and new air-handling units being installed to provide cooling.
