Hinsdale/Peru Council on Aging approves minutes, reviews finances and finalizes events calendar

The Hinsdale/Peru Council on Aging met April 13 in the Town Hall Community Room and approved routine business while setting a full calendar of community events for the year.
Jill Cole moved to accept the March 9, 2026 minutes; Sue Malone seconded the motion and the board approved it, the minutes record. During the treasurer's report, Jennifer Stark distributed the updated April 13 financial statement and said the Council has not yet received remaining state funds but that there is money in the town account to cover near-term needs. Stark also called attention to a need for basic office supplies and a replacement BJ's membership card.
The Council discussed options to reduce newsletter costs after Jim Alden reported contacting other area Councils on Aging. Alden said the group found LPI (Cromwell, Conn.), which provides an ad-driven newsletter at lower cost and requires a four-month lead time; the board discussed using CANVA templates to gather content and Alden proposed distributing a one-page flier in June to notify seniors about a new format for the September newsletter.
Under new business, Wahconah High School student Haze Brown outlined plans for an intergenerational board-game and craft day on Saturday, April 25, from 10 a.m. to noon; Brown said other students will volunteer and the COA will provide bottled water and snacks. Andrew Fitch, identified in the minutes as a member of the NA City Council who is running for state representative, was listed as a guest; the minutes note that campaigning is not allowed at COA events and Fitch agreed to serve as a January speaker on a non-campaign topic instead.
The Council confirmed its luncheon schedule and speakers through November. Highlights recorded include an April 16 lasagna luncheon with Carol Gokale speaking about coping with addiction (32 meals ordered), a May 14 Super Senior Party (invitations mailed), a June 11 sing-along with Roger Tincknell, and a possible August 13 performance by a six-piece band called Soular Eclipse (Jill Cole has a contact). Dan Kauffman is scheduled for September and November appearances; Mary Serrat is scheduled to portray Susan B. Anthony on Oct. 15.
Health services and clinics also received attention: Nancy Slattery will launch a monthly blood-pressure clinic starting the second Thursday in May at 11:30 a.m. in the COA office and walk-ins are welcome. Alice Gmyrek reported on foot-clinic logistics after meeting with Lois; the next foot clinic is set for April 20. Margi Roussin will arrange a February presentation by Laurie Martinelli on "Cycling in Cuba," requested as a 20-minute talk.
Linda Schermerhorn moved to adjourn at 6:45 p.m.; Jill Cole seconded, and the meeting ended. The minutes were submitted by Marion Tinney.
