Rome selectmen move to centralize newsletter review after resident raises concern

Kelly Archer, 1st Selectman, and the Board of Selectmen discussed a resident’s concern about the town newsletter at their June 15 meeting. Barbara Russell phoned in to report she had spoken with Alice VanDerWerken and said some newsletter submissions had bypassed the town office. Russell said the Selectboard has repeatedly requested the opportunity to review articles before publication.
The board agreed to prepare and send a written explanation of the submission process to VanDerWerken. VanDerWerken has requested a phone call for further clarity; the board said it would provide that. The minutes note that some submissions had previously been sent to the office to review but that process had not been followed in all cases.
The matter was recorded under Old Business and the board did not take a formal vote on an ordinance or policy change during the meeting. The action recorded is a direction to prepare a written explanation for the volunteer who formats the newsletter.
