Hoosac Valley third graders demonstrate seawall engineering project in applied-learning spotlight

Hoosac Valley Regional elementary staff and third-grade students presented an applied-learning science project on Feb. 9 that asked: How can we protect houses from hurricane water and waves?
Using the PhD Science curriculum, students studied extreme weather events, brainstormed solutions, planned designs, selected limited materials, built model seawalls and tested them. After initial family-testing sessions, students made improvements and retested models during the meeting; both designs reduced water reaching the model houses. Students answered questions, described the project as enjoyable and engaging, and were recognized with certificates for their presentations.
The project integrated science learning with hands-on engineering and strengthened home–school connections through family participation.
