County honors volunteer Creek Cleanup Project for removing over 51,000 pounds of debris

The Washington County Board of County Commissioners presented a certificate of recognition on June 30 to the Creek Cleanup Project and volunteers for their multi‑year work removing trash and debris from local waterways.
Alex Reed, deputy director of environmental programs, described the volunteer effort started by Eric Grayson in 2017 and said volunteers have hosted more than 20 community events and removed tens of thousands of pounds of material from local creeks. At the podium the board read a certificate noting the group removed “over 51,520 pounds of litter and materials” from Kaneka Jig and Antietam/Antidum creeks and thanked them for improving stream health, safety and recreational access.
The board and staff emphasized that county divisions have supported volunteer cleanups by helping with disposal, site logistics and stormwater coordination. Commissioners presented the certificate and posed for photos with volunteers.
