Council OKs event permits and $90,000 Thriving Communities grant; Monroe Bayou alcohol permit considered

The Monroe City Council on Aug. 13 unanimously approved several event permits and exceptions to the Open Container Ordinance for the Bayou Black Open Rodeo, United Way Golf Tournament, the K9 Outreach Blues Concert and the city's Rollin' on the Riverfront.
The Council also approved a $90,000 capacity‑building subgrant agreement with the National Main Street Center for the Thriving Communities Program. Grant Writer Meagan Risinger said the award will fund supplies and projects such as asphalt art and murals.
Council considered an application by Michael Riley d/b/a The Monroe Bayou for a new Class A alcoholic beverage permit. Andrea Edwards, listed in the packet as general manager, attended to observe the licensing process and told the Council she is "so excited" and hopes the business will be a positive addition to Monroe. Members thanked Edwards for her work and noted final administrative checks were cleared by the police and sales‑tax offices in the packet materials.
