Ignite reading tutoring shows early-grade gains, Hoosac Valley officials say

At the April 27 meeting of the Hoosac Valley Regional School Committee, Kristen Palatt presented midpoint data from the district’s Ignite reading tutoring program for 45 students in grades 1–3. According to the presentation, 100% of students in the cohort had mastered basic alphabet knowledge on the assessments used and 82% had progressed to grade 1 level on the measures reported.
Palatt told the committee the 45 students were selected based on benchmark testing and noted assessment results can vary depending on the testing instrument. Committee members discussed the importance of tracking students who receive tutoring across multiple years to compare their long-term progress with peers who did not receive the service.
School staff also raised concerns that recent cuts to state budget lines could reduce grant funding that historically helped pay for tutoring services. The committee did not take formal action on the program during the meeting but instructed staff to continue monitoring progress and to report on longer-term outcomes for multi-year participants.
