Police and fire chiefs report May calls, shooting arrest and department upgrades

At the June 1 meeting of the Minden City Council, the city’s fire and police leadership briefed the council on May operations and recent developments.
Assistant Fire Chief Ronnie Schrein reported the department responded to 31 calls in May, including structure and vehicle fires, rescues and a hazmat-related incident. He said a PIO evaluator will be on site Sept. 14 for a field-site review and briefed the council on progress toward a new fire engine currently in production.
Police Chief Jared McIver reported departmental activity for May, noting about 2,069 calls for service, 48 motor-vehicle accidents and a recent shooting investigation in which officers, using license-plate-reader support and assistance from the Webster Parish Sheriff’s Office and other agencies, located and apprehended a suspect within about 10 hours. McIver said the department is deploying new sound meters to aid enforcement of the city’s noise ordinance and congratulated the new officer confirmed by council, Heather Butcher.
“Through LPRs and Webster Parish Sheriff’s Office and other agencies helping, we were able to apprehend the suspect,” McIver said, describing interagency cooperation during the shooting investigation. The chief also said the department is implementing new noise-detection equipment across the city.
Council members thanked both departments for their reports and did not take further action beyond accepting the reports into the record.
