Public works committee renews hangar lease, hears airport operations update

The Sawyer County Public Works Committee voted to extend a hangar lease for Dan Marcel and heard updates on airport operations at a meeting that began at 5:01 p.m.

The committee approved the lease extension by voice vote after a motion from Chuck Vanettton and a second from Jim Evans; no members recorded opposition. Committee members discussed the lease rate, which is set at $0.15 per square foot and was raised from $0.05 in 2021 during prior committee review. The approval was for a renewal cycle described in committee discussion as a new 20-year and 10-year term for the asset and ground arrangement.

Derek (airport staff) reported that traffic at the airport has increased, with jets operating and new tenants added over recent months. Derek said he maintains close contact with the county administrator and with contractor representatives about equipment and procurement. He told the committee that the contractor Swedki of Oaklair has been responsive on equipment delivery and that some larger items, notably a snowblower, may not be available immediately because of production lead times; he described the cost of major snow-removal machinery in broad terms as a "hundred some thousand"-dollar class of purchase and said the committee will need to discuss whether county departments or outside contractors will operate new equipment.

Derek also informed the committee of a recent on-field incident that he said the sheriff treated as a mental-health matter; according to Derek, the sheriff indicated no charges were expected. The committee agreed that such incidents are "noteworthy" and that staff will include appropriate reporting in future updates while being cautious about sensitive details.

The first mention of Dan Marcel during committee discussion noted his use of the hangar and endorsement by committee members as an "exemplary hangar holder." Committee members framed the lease vote as consistent with rates the county had established in prior reviews.

The committee did not attach a separate document to the lease action at the meeting; staff indicated the matter would be reflected in the minutes and the lease paperwork will be completed when signed. The committee moved on to other agenda items after the vote.
