Board members at the Southern Columbia Area SD meeting described the financial and operational challenges facing Columbia Montour Vo‑Tech and urged immediate action to stabilize the program.
Several board members characterized the Vo‑Tech budget as an urgent problem that requires focused leadership and community engagement. One board member said the situation should be treated “like an emergency,” pressed for an interim director with vocational experience if the current director remains unavailable, and urged forming committees and JOC (Joint Operating Committee) workgroups to engage alumni, sending districts, faculty and students in planning a sustainable future for the program.
Members emphasized the district’s limited levers (the budget being the primary one) and said failing to act would jeopardize sustainability. The board discussed that closing the program outright is not an option under current requirements because students must be sent to an available vocational training program; as one participant summarized, “by law, you have to send them somewhere,” noting that outsourcing students could increase costs for sending districts.
Board members praised recent community engagement at JOC meetings and noted staff progress on special education pieces and other short‑term fixes, but several said the hard work to develop a durable plan begins now. The board expects committees to draft a framework that outlines decision points, outlines how stakeholders will be included, and identifies who will make the final recommendations to the board.
