After an executive session for contract negotiation and legal advice, the Beaufort County Board of Education voted to approve Amendment No. 1 with Thompson Turner Construction for the Ladies Island Middle School early-release site work, setting a guaranteed maximum price (GMP) of $7,752,754.
Board member Nave moved the measure upon return to public session and it was seconded and approved by voice/hand vote. During public discussion following the motion, some board members acknowledged community concerns about changes to the building location and amenities—specifically requests from students and community members for a lecture/auditorium space—but said the amendment was necessary to advance site work and preserve schedule and budget commitments.
Board member Smith said he supported the motion but asked that staff provide more information to the community about design changes and cost drivers, noting constituent concerns over the change in site configuration. Superintendent and project staff said they would follow up with additional detail for the board and community.
The motion authorized the amendment at the stated GMP and included direction that the construction package proceed under the terms negotiated in executive session; board materials indicated the approval follows South Carolina contract-code provisions for procurement and negotiation.
