IURC and OUCC to hold July 6 field hearing on Michigan City rate case; board will observe but not answer questions

Board members were notified at the June 30 meeting that the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission and the Office of Utility Consumer Counselor will hold a public field hearing on the waterworks rate case at 6 p.m. Monday, July 6 in the city hall council chambers.
The staff presenter told members that utility attorneys for the board and the OUCC will handle the proceedings and public questions. “I will be present paying attention and taking notes, but we will not I will not be answering any questions,” the presenter said.
The presenter said board members are welcome to attend but that the hearing is open to the general public. The field hearing is an opportunity for customers and residents to speak to regulators and OUCC staff about the proposed rate change; the board indicated it would not directly respond to public questions at that session.
The meeting did not include a formal discussion of proposed new rates or any board vote on rate-setting measures; staff said the role of the board at the field hearing will be observational and to take notes for the utility’s records.
