Bristol board approves June 17 as high school graduations to accommodate families and exams

The Board of Education voted April 1 to set high school graduation for both Bristol Central and Bristol Eastern on Wednesday, June 17, 2026.

Joe Grabowski and Chief Academic Officer Carly Thorne explained that with the district’s 180th scheduled day and exam calendar, seniors’ final exams would be held June 15–16 with review days earlier in the week, allowing ceremonies on June 17 while keeping instructional and assessment requirements intact. Administrators told the board they had met with principals, teacher teams and parent organizers to minimize disruption to advanced‑credit and AP/ECE pathways and to accommodate all‑night graduation events planned by families.

Thorne said the district had reviewed potential instructional impacts and that seniors who need common assessments would be administered those exams in separate settings on June 15–16 so they meet course requirements before diplomas are issued. The board’s counsel confirmed the change is allowable after the 180th school day as originally published on the calendar.

Commissioners asked about consequences for seniors who might wish to remain students beyond graduation; administrators clarified that students receive their diploma at the ceremony and are no longer considered students for district events after that point. With no further questions, a motion to approve June 17 as the graduation date was made, seconded and passed.

The board noted principals and organizers had worked to secure venues and that moving the date earlier helped families who had planned travel and post‑graduation events.
