District to restart in-school CNA program for up to 40 students under Perkins grant

The Bristol Board heard a presentation on May 6 about a reinstated certified nursing assistant (CNA) program that will run during the regular school day and be funded through the Perkins grant and flexible district funds. The district presenter, introduced by the superintendent, said the program will expand the number of students served to 40 and provide full funding for tuition, uniforms and textbooks.
"This will double the number of students that we're able to service. So, we'll be able to have 40 students go through the program. It's during the school day. They'll be able to take the Connecticut CNA licensure exam. It's all paid for. Their uniforms are paid for. Their textbooks are paid for," the presenter said.
District leaders described the training as a high-wage, high-demand credential that allows students to enter the workforce immediately after graduation. The program will be offered in partnership with vocational providers and uses Perkins grant language that permits these workforce-preparation expenditures. Board members praised the return of the program and highlighted that it requires no general-fund new spending for the initial rollout.
Next steps: staff will finalize scheduling, enrollment details and provider agreements and report back to the board with implementation logistics and student recruitment timelines.
