Newtonville station budget rises to $66M; MBTA says increases required to avoid cutting scope

A project presenter said the original $50 million was a goal budget, but industry outreach and realistic pricing led the team to increase the estimate to $66 million to avoid deleting design elements such as roofs and elevators. "We actually increased the budget to 66 million," a staff member said.
MBTA staff acknowledged the agency’s capital program is constrained and said adding money to this project required either delaying or partially defunding other projects in the MBTA pipeline. "Whenever we add money to any project, we have to make decisions on other projects," a presenter said.
Residents and councilors asked where the extra $16 million would come from and whether the agency had explored alternate funding sources. MBTA staff said the increase was the result of internal MBTA budget prioritization and that further funding details and tradeoffs are determined through the agency’s formal capital-planning and committee processes.
No formal vote or decision was taken at the meeting; MBTA staff presented the revised budget as the planning baseline and said procurement and committee approval steps will follow as the project advances.
