MBTA to rebuild Newtonville Station with high-level platforms; full closure planned for Dec. 2026–April 2029

MBTA project staff told a virtual public meeting that Newtonville Station will be rebuilt as a fully accessible, double-sided high-level station with a 400-foot platform, overhead pedestrian bridge and elevators.

Steve Stark, senior project manager, described the work as replacing the existing low-level single platform with "a 400 foot double-sided high level platform" connected by an overhead bridge and two elevators to each platform, plus stairs, CCTV and upgraded lighting and tactile platform edges. MBTA capital delivery director Marti Kadall said the work would also modernize the Washington Street plaza and add passenger amenities.

MBTA staff said constrained site geometry—bounded by the Massachusetts Turnpike to the south and adjacent streets to the north—requires realigning track and creating space for south-side and north-side platforms. "We will be covering the tracks and shifting the tracks over approximately 7 ft to the north," staff said, and noted that track work of that scale is typically done during weekend outages, during which shuttle or bus service would replace commuter rail service.

The MBTA presented a 30-month construction schedule, with a proposed notice-to-proceed for civil/site early-action work in November 2026, platform foundations NTP in March 2027 and major steel/long-lead work in May 2027. Staff said the program anticipates substantial completion in April 2029.

Project impacts the MBTA flagged include: a full but temporary station closure proposed to begin December 2026; night and weekend work; temporary laydown and construction staging near Washington Street that will repurpose existing parking; relocation of nearby bus stops; and lane restrictions on Washington Street. The MBTA advised that alternative bus routing is under study and that the 59 has been proposed as one interim option because of fleet and driver constraints.

MBTA staff committed to posting the slide deck, renderings and a meeting recording to the project website and to establishing a construction hotline and inbox (project inbox newtoncrvt.com) before the start of work.

The meeting concluded with MBTA and city staff saying they will continue coordination with Newton city officials and with bus operations teams to refine alternatives for the two-and-a-half-year service disruption.
