The Lynn School Committee set aside its regular agenda May 26 to celebrate the accomplishments of student-athletes across the district, with athletic directors and dozens of students from LinTech, Lynn English, LVTI, Classical, Frederick Douglass Collegiate Academy and co-op programs recounting championship seasons, record-setting performances and college scholarships.
The event showcased both team and individual achievements and emphasized coaches, trainers and family supports. “These successes are the result of hard work and dedication of our student athletes, coaches, athletic directors, athletic trainers, our nurses, families, and school staff,” said Colleen Peterson, who introduced athletic directors and organized the event.
Student speakers described what sports have meant to them. A101, a senior at LinTech and captain of both basketball and track, said playing basketball was “one of the most meaningful parts of high school,” citing tournament appearances, state vocational championships and scholarship offers. “Basketball keeps me grounded. It’s my reset button that shows me that resolutions come from action, not overthinking,” the student said.
Athletic directors noted rising participation across multiple sports, new banners and first-time program milestones: LinTech reported state vocational championships in basketball and success in track and baseball; Lynn English cited back-to-back four-year CAC championships in swim and expanded rosters in several sports; Classical celebrated a GBL baseball championship and deep basketball runs.
Coaches were singled out repeatedly. Peterson and others thanked trainers and assistants such as Johanna Walsh and Joe Conlin for day-to-day support, and coaches including Coach Hogan, Coach Bucko and Brittany Legalt for program leadership. Athletic directors also noted recent investments in uniforms, equipment and fields as drivers of growing participation.
The committee ended the recognition segment with appreciation for the staff and families who support school athletics. No formal committee action was tied to the presentations; the segment served as a community acknowledgement of student achievement.
